REPLACE WINTER BLUES WITH SOME GREEN
On a cold day when you find yourself feeling uninspired and blue, don’t just idle away the time waiting for
the first buds of spring. By making some lifestyle adjustments now, you can bring green into your world
even in the dead of winter.
Here are a few tips to get you into a green state of mind:
• Gather your re-usable shopping bags and place them near the door so you don’t forget to take them to
the grocery store.
• Run your ceiling fans in reverse so they turn clockwise. This can make a room feel warmer as it sends
the warm air (which rises) down towards the floor.
• Make sure your de-icer is made with magnesium chloride and NOT sodium chloride or salt. It will do less
damage to sidewalks, plants and the waterways which take the street water runoff.
• Winterize your car. By checking the air filter, fluid levels and tire pressure you will be safer and get better
performance and gas mileage.
• Tweak your thermostat down a degree or two. If you have a programmable thermostat, learn how to use
it or else consider getting one installed.
• Take inventory of your appliances. If you need something new shop on line to find the best bargains
before running around. Make sure to get Energy Star equipment to save on your utility bills.
• Get those Double Draft Stop pieces for doors that open to the outside. They actually work and are
cheapest at Home Depot - about $7 -and worth the money.
• Open the curtains and let the sun in when you can, especially on windows with a southern exposure as
this can help warm a room naturally.
• Take inventory of the lighting in your house. Make a list of where you can replace incandescent bulbs
with compact florescent (CF) ones.
• Feed the birds by putting some peanut butter on a pine cone then rolling it in cracker crumbs or stale
cereal. Have the kids hang them outside on the trees to keep them in touch with nature and show how with
a little thought, what may at first seem like garbage, may actually be useful.
Remember, even a few changes can make a difference!
